Chicago Events in March typically revolve around one thing: Irish! The city's St. Patrick's Day events are the most popular things to do even if you're not Irish.
The fun this year starts on Saturday, March 15th when the festivities kick off at 10a when the Chicago River is dyed green. The St. Patrick's Day Parade kicks off at noon starting at Balbo and Columbus. The parade proceeds north on Columbus and the viewing stand is located in front of the Buckingham Fountain. Organizers urge you to take public transit to see this year's parade.
The South Side Irish Parade will be held on Sunday, March 16th at noon starting at 103rd proceeding down Western Avenue to 115th Street. Unlike the old wild days of the parade, this year's event is a family-friendly event with a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol use along the parade route. The event's website reminds you that “you can enjoy yourself responsibly at any of the bars along Western Avenue but there will be no open containers of alcohol allowed in the public way”.
But not all events in Chicago in March revolve around St. Patrick's Day. In fact one celebrates the birth of the City of Chicago. Come celebrate Chicago's 177th Birthday on Tuesday, March 4th at the Daley Plaze Rally which also will celebrate Mardi Gras. Food truck vendors will be out in force including...
March 2nd is the date for the 12th annual Chicago Polar Plunge and Melt Down Party. This event is the largest fundraiser benefitting the Special Olympics Chicago programs and other Special Children's Charities. 1. Know What You Want
This should go without saying but some home-buyers forget the type of home that suits them best when they see a fantastic price or a home that shows well but yet may no be practical. Decide ahead of time what you're looking for whether that's a new or existing home, a ranch or multistory home.
2. Research, research, research!
With any major purchase, research is vital in today's economic world. Once you've decided what type of home is for you, you'll need to learn about the different cities, counties, neighborhoods and subdivisions. 3. Get Your Finances in Order
Lenders typically say you can afford a house priced two to three times your gross income. But with changes in the economy and lending practices, it's important to talk to a financial expert that can help guide you through the process. It's also helpful to get pre-qualified as this makes you more desirable to home sellers.
4. Think Long-Term
Your plans for the future may directly impact the type of home you buy today. For example, are you looking for a starter home with plans to move again in a few years? Or do you hope to stay for 5-10 years or longer? These questions are important when it comes to searching for your new home.
5. Work With a Realtor
It's important to work with a professional that knows the market and that works to protect you during the home buying process. 1. Homeowner Exemption
Taxpayers whose single-family home, townhouse, condominium, co-op or apartment building (up to six units) is their primary residence can save $250 to $2,000 per year, depending on local tax rates and assessment increases. First-time applicants must have been the occupants of the property as of January 1 of the tax year in question.
The Cook County Assessor’s Office now automatically renews Homeowner Exemptions for properties that were not sold to new owners in the last year.
In neighborhoods where assessments have increased sharply, this exemption also now can help buffer the reassessment and be worth as much as $2,000 ($20,000 in Equalized Assessed Value multiplied by the local tax rate).

2. Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption
Seniors can save up to $250 a year in property taxes, and up to $750 when combined with the Homeowner Exemption. For the 2012 tax year, the applicant must have owned and occupied the property as of January 1, 2012 and must have been 65 years of age or older during the year for which you are applying.
3. Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Exemption
Qualified senior citizens can apply for a freeze of the assessed value of their property. Over time, in many areas, this program results in taxes changing minimally and often decreasing as surrounding properties continue to rise in assessed value. This is the most valuable homeowner exemption program. The value increases over the years as it eliminates the impact of regular reassessment increases that may occur every three years.
For the 2012 tax year, the applicant must have owned and occupied the home on January 1, 2011 and January 1, 2012 and have been responsible for the 2011 and 2012 taxes.
4. Home Improvement Exemption
Homeowners can make up to $75,000 worth of property improvements without an increase in property taxes for at least four years. The value varies depending on the reduction of the assessed value and the tax rates where the property is located.
Senior Citizen Tax Deferral
The household income limit to participate in this program has increased to $55,000. This program works like a loan from the State of Illinois to qualified senior citizens, with an annual interest rate of 6%. Any portion or all (up to $5,000 per year) of the tax may be deferred until the house is sold or until the death of the taxpayer. To apply, contact the Cook County Treasurer's Office at 312.443.5100.

The boundaries of Wicker Park are North Ave. on the North, Division St. on the South, Western Ave on the West, and Ashland on the East. The center of all the action is at the intersection of Damen, Milwaukee and North Avenues. Wandering the streets from this location, you?ll run across some appealing shops that add to the unique flavor of the neighborhood. It is one of the most eclectic, artsy areas of Chicago. Wicker Park is a fun, attractive area considered by some to be the hippest place to live in the city.
The historic area of Wicker Park is noticeable by the attractive three-flats and old 1800 mansions, of note - Beer Baron Row (Hoyne Street between Pierce and Schiller). It is an architecturally diverse variety of Victorian homes and modern low-rise buildings. Cheap buildings, low rents and a convenient El stop brought bohemian chic to Wicker Park.
This area is now called home by a large group of working artists and musicians. The annual Around the Coyote Art Show occurs in September when more than 300 local artists open their studios to the public. It is a huge event that brings thousands of art-lovers and collectors from all over the city. There is the newly renovated fountain in Wicker Park at 1425 N. Damen. The Victorian fountain was rebuilt after some of the original molds used in its casting were found at an ironworks company in Alabama. In the offbeat quality of this remarkable neighborhood, you will find a new upscale restaurant next to a little boutique selling all kinds of vintage and kitschy items. Its restaurants, bars, galleries, street musicians, and boutiques contribute to the amiability and charm of this considerably real neighborhood.
The West Loop has become a sought-after Chicago neighborhood for many first-time home buyers. Springing up from a late-1800s warehouse district, several of the area?s storage buildings have been converted into condos and lofts. These new "industrial chic" residences offer city dwellers especially large living spaces and a location close to downtown ? for reasonably good prices. The median sale price in the West Loop is around $350,000, but the range of housing options span from one-bedroom condo-lofts in the high $100,000s to sprawling 3,750-square-foot lofts with three bedrooms for $1.5 million. Because the area is not as congested as other Chicago neighborhoods, a number of West Loop properties offer garage or street parking.
In addition to trendy loft-like abodes, West Loopers enjoy an energetic and thriving community, budding with commercial, dining and entertainment venues. A very popular Athens-inspired cluster of restaurants, known as Greektown, is situated along the eastern edge of the West Loop. People from around the city and suburbs visit Greektown for authentic dishes and the warm mom-and-pop atmosphere. Other West Loop cuisine includes sushi, Italian, Chinese, Mexican and all-American. In between cafe's, eateries and restaurants are a slew of bars, lounges and nightclubs. A number of art galleries also dot the area, adding to the creative identity of the West Loop culture.
Staying true to the neighborhood?s industrial past, the manufacturing site for a main Chicago coffee institution is located in the West Loop. Hints of fresh coffee beans infuse the air anytime Intelligentsia Roasting Works kicks into gear and visitors can tour the facilities for an inside look at the production process. Another top attraction in the West Loop is Harpo Studios, where Oprah used to film her daytime talk show. The TV megastar purchased an old armory in the late 1980s and transformed it into a state-of-the-art television studio. During the summer the West Loop picks up with a handful of street festivals, outdoor markets and annual events. The neighborhood hosts fun community celebrations such as the Taste of Randolph Street (a smaller adaptation of the city's super-sized food fest in Grant Park) and Pitchfork Music Festival (a jam-packed indie rock party hosting some of today's top bands).
Loft is the housing language of the West Loop! New, old and in between, there is a loft for everyone's kind of style. Don't skip the West Loop if you are looking for a unique loft living space.
Much of Streeterville was once Lake Michigan. The neighborhood was named for one of Chicago's great eccentrics, George Wellington ?Cap? Streeter. In 1886, Streeter ran his schooner aground on a sandbar near Michigan Avenue. Unable to dislodge the vessel, he turned it into a home. Slowly, landfill turned the lake into land and Streeter laid claim to 168 acres of land. After some clashes with the local police and battles in court, he was finally evicted. But he continued to lay claim to the area known as Streeterville until his death in 1921. (The case was just recently settled within the last few years.)
Streeterville is the very heart of North Michigan Avenue. There you will find Chicago?s high-end shopping district, featuring Water Tower Place (Macy's, Lord & Taylor), 900 North Michigan Avenue (Bloomingdale?s, Gucci), as well as Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms, Saks Fifth Avenue, Crate & Barrel, Virgin Records, The Apple Store, and many, many more. In addition to restaurants and movie theaters, Streeterville also holds Northwestern University?s Chicago campus, which includes both law and medical schools. Also the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business calls Streeterville home. In fact you can find almost here, except a parking space. The parking in Streeterville is next to impossible and you could spend the whole afternoon looking for a spot, unless you rent a space.
