Old Irving Park

Old Irving Park was originally intended to be a suburb but has become a diverse north side Chicago neighborhood offering the amenities of big city life while retaining its cozy charm.  Some call it a “suburb within a city”.  Located seven miles northwest of the Loop, the boundaries of Old Irving Park are Montrose Avenue to the north, Addison Street to the south, the Chicago River to the east and Pulaski Street to the west.

Old Irving Park real estate is made up primarily of two- and three-flat condos, bungalows and frame houses.  Old Irving Park homes feature some of the city’s most beautiful architecture reminding some of Oak Park’s stately family manors.  Old Irving Park also has a five-acre historic district (north of Waveland Avenue and east of Pulaski Road) that has over 120 architecturally significant bungalows including two buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

The majority of the Old Irving Park neighborhood is middle-class homes and features streets lined with trees.  These tree-lined streets are among the prettiest walking routes in Chicago.  And most Irving Park blocks have friendly, ethnically mixed communities unto themselves with backyard barbecues and block parties.

Real estate prices in Irving Park wildly vary from the average sale price of a one-bedroom condo for $178,000 to townhomes that run between $300,000 and $800,000.

Irving Park is also home to several Chicago Park District parks including the original Independence Park plus Home Park, California Park and Revere Park.  California Park is also known as the McFetridge Sports Center and is the home toe Chicago’s only indoor hockey and tennis facilities including an NHL-sized ice rink that seats 1,200.

Old Irving Park also hosts an active commercial district that provides a greats selection of independent businesses and specialty shops as well as a large number of restaurants and watering holes.  Restaurants include German, American, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Bosnian and Serbian.  Irving Park’s nightlife scene is perhaps best known for the Abbey Pub which is one of Chicago’s best-loved music spots.

Summer is the season for outdoor events and Old Irving Park is host to Benfest, an annual outdoor festival hosted by the St. Benedict Parish.  It’s a two-day party featuring live music, food, beer and more.

Old Irving Park’s history began in 1869 and traverses 150 years of American history.  It’s transformation from 200 acres of farmland to the thriving cozy neighborhood it has become is truly amazing and has a lot to offer for residents and visitors.

Chicago’s Wrigleyville Neighborhood

Spring has arrived in Chicago!  And with spring comes sunshine and 70s one day and rain and temps in the 50s the next.  But spring also brings the return of baseball to Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood.  Wrigleyville’s history is obviously linked to Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs.  Wrigley Field was built in 1914 and now serves as a Chicago and baseball landmark.  Wrigleyville is the name of the neighborhood that surrounds Wrigley Field and is also referred to as Central Lakeview.  The neighborhood encompasses an area that runs from Irving Park Road and Diversey Parkway to Racine Avenue and Halsted Street.

Wrigleyville includes many houses and low-rise brick buildings including some with rooftop bleachers which serve as Wrigley Rooftops where Cubs fans purchase seats to view games and typically all you can eat and drink service.  These rooftop owners work in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs organization.

The Wrigleyville neighborhood is so much more than Wrigley Field.  It’s also host to a wide selection of Chicago restaurants including Salt and Pepper, the Kit Kat Lounge, Tuscany on Clark, Shabu-Ya, Mr. Thai, Heaven on Seven, Bar Selona and more.  Wrigleyville is also home to some of Chicago’s most famous bars including The Cubby Bear, the Ivy on Clark, Chicago’s Blarney Stone, John Barleycorn’s, Murphy’s Bleachers, Casey Moran’s, Sluggers, Sports Corner and Roadhouse 66 all located near the Wrigley Field intersection of Clark and Addison Streets.

The businesses, restaurants, pubs and boutique businesses of Wrigleyville draw tourists from across the world as well as its fair share of Chicagoans.  But these aren’t the only attractions in the neighborhood.  It’s also home to several theatres including the Music Box Theatre (a historical movie house), the Stage Left Theatre (featuring live plays) and the Improv Olympic featuring shows that depend on audience participation.  Music venues include Metro, The Wild Hare, One and the Cubby Bear.

Wrigleyville residents are typically younger, many under 30 and most are professionals with families.  Despite the area’s associated with Cubs baseball, it manages to have a residential feel that is actually a perfect spot for quiet walks along the sidewalks away from the main streets.  Buying a home in Wrigleyville could be a charming brownstone with large windows shaded by trees.

Wrigleyville is home to those who love the Chicago Cubs but also serves as one of Chicago’s most spirited neighborhoods and a great place to call home!
