When opened in 1930, the Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, located in the River North area, was the largest building in the world with 4,000,000 square feet of floor space. This enormous building is centered near the junction of the Chicago River branches. The building continues to be a leading retailing and wholesale destination, hosting 20,000 visitors and tenants per day.
Google recently announced that it will be moving its Motorola Mobility division from Libertyville, IL to the Merchandise Mart. Google is said to be taking up four floors of the mart next year, and will be using the Mart’s roof space for large events. It is the third major technology company to sign a lease with the mart recently, making the River North area home to the tech savvy.
