Humboldt Park is a west side Chicago neighborhood that is primarily defined by Humboldt Park, a public park that is over 200 acres.  The park itself was named for German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.  The area was founded in 1869 and was originally home to a large Scandinavian population.  The Germans followed in the early 1900s while the 1920s saw an influx of Polish and Italian Americans.  It wasn’t until the 1960s that Humboldt Park saw an increase in its Puerto Rican residents and today they make up about 25% of the population.

This diverse neighborhood today is bordered by North Avenue, Western Avenue, Division Street and California Avenue.  The community is the only officially recognized Puerto Rican neighborhood in the country and hosts the annual Puerto Rican People’s Parade.  Here you’ll also find the “Paseo Boricua” which is home to Humboldt Park’s iconic and massive metal Puerto Rican flags which stretch across the street at each end of the strip signaling your entrance into this community.

Humboldt Park has plenty of open green areas in the park itself along with recreation facilities, paved trails, baseball diamonds, swimming pool, fitness center, athletic fields, music courtyard, boathouse and more including a small river.  It hosts a Concert in the Park series, outdoor movies and many other fun family activities and serves as the area’s major draw.

The housing market in Humboldt Park is mostly comprised of greystones build in the late 1800s, brick bungalows and two-flat homes (built in the early 1900s) and small apartment buildings.  This variety of architectural styles creates the area’s eye-catching residential blocks that feature quiet streets, big backyards and lots of trees.  Home values vary from condos or lofts often valued in the low $200,000s to condos and townhomes priced between $250,000 and $500,000.  Humboldt Park also includes some properties priced up to $1 million.  This family-oriented community is home to many Chicagoans ranging from artists to families to young professionals.
